Article Abstract
Extensive clinical experience has accumulated with trimethoprim- sulfamethoxazole(TMP-SMX;cotrimoxazole)since it was first marketed in 1969.The most common adverse effects reported are gastrointestinal update (2%to 8%)and skin rashes(1%to 6%)[1-10].Severe skin lesions and thrombocytopenia/leukopenia are the most common serious toxicities, but are rare events[11].A variety of other adverse effects, including headache, confusion, and fever, have been documented;however, aseptic meningitis and meningitis-like symptoms have only recently been recognized as adverse reactions to this drug.We describe three patients seen at our institution in the last five years with aseptic meningitis related to the use of TMP- SMX and review the literature relevant to this unusual adverse drug reaction.
